9月は外で忙しかった。神宮球場、国立競技場、武道館、富士スピードウェイ、自由が丘など。日常のリズムを取り戻そう。10月は家での仕事に時間を使いたい。
走らなかった。さすがに疲れが溜まっている。そりゃそうだ。9月の走行距離は111キロ。
ぼくがホストを務めるタイムアウト目黒の「ローリング・ストーンズを演奏する会」（仮称）は、10月26日（日）19時から行われることになった。ぼくは毎日、ストーンズを聴き、ふつうのチューニングのギターと、オープンGチューニングの5弦ギターに触っている。左手の指の先はもちもちの美肌で、とてもギターを弾ける状態にはない。明日は店主と打ち合わせをする。詳細はまた追って。
さて、「一曲紹介」の第2回目。ストーンズをあまり知らない人を対象に、今日は代表的で象徴的な曲にしよう。1972年に発表されたアルバム『Exile On Main Street』に収録された「Tumbling Dice」はライブで必ず演奏される定番曲だ。もしセットリストにこの曲が入らなかったら、それは確実に異常である。そんなことあったのかな？ それくらい代表的な曲だ。そしてなにが象徴的かというと、ミドル・テンポのリズム、3コードの進行、キース・リチャーズのオープンGチューニングのギター、2本のギターの絡み、ミック・ジャガーの韻の効いた歌唱とダンス、といったところ。これが典型的なストーンズのサウンドである、と言ってもまったく過言ではないだろう。
公式YouTubeのこの映像は1990年のもの。ロニー・ウッドのソロに入るときのキースが素敵でうふふ。ひとつ苦言を呈するなら、ステージが巨大すぎる。客はどこを見たらよいかわからない。会場はロンドンのウェンブリー・スタジアムらしい。

I’d been thinking about self-deprecation when, as if by chance, a friend brought up the very same topic. We laughed about it. What a relief.
September was a busy month out in the world—Jingu Stadium, the National Stadium, Budokan, Fuji Speedway, Jiyugaoka… I need to reclaim my rhythm. In October, I want to spend more time working from home.
No running today. I’m clearly worn out. No surprise there. My total mileage for September was 111 km.
As for the Rolling Stones night I’ll be hosting at Timeout in Meguro, we’ve locked in the date: Sunday, October 26 at 7 p.m. I’ve been listening to the Stones daily and practicing on two guitars—one in standard tuning, the other in 5-string open G. My left-hand fingertips are still soft and baby-smooth, not yet ready for real playing. Tomorrow, I’ll meet with the venue owner to finalize details. More on that soon.
Let’s continue the “Song of the Day” series with its second entry. For those not deeply familiar with the Stones, I thought I’d pick something truly representative and iconic.
Today’s song is “Tumbling Dice,” from the 1972 album Exile on Main Street. It’s one of their staples—always played live. If it’s ever not on the setlist, something’s definitely wrong. Has that ever even happened?
What makes it emblematic? A mid-tempo groove, a classic three-chord progression, Keith Richards on open-G guitar, two guitars weaving around each other, Mick Jagger’s rhythmic phrasing and dancing—all the hallmarks of the Stones’ sound are there. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say this song is the Stones, distilled.
The official YouTube clip I’m linking is from 1990. Watch for Keith as Ronnie Wood steps in for his solo—he’s charming, and I can’t help but smile. One complaint: the stage is just too massive. I wouldn’t even know where to look if I were in the audience. The venue, apparently, was Wembley Stadium in London.
