ノラ・ジョーンズの来日公演を観に武道館へ行く。
ぼくは彼女の用いる音楽の形式が一貫して好きだし、曲も演奏も抜群、さらにその人間のキャラクターにまで惚れているときたら、それは素晴らしい音楽体験になる。心底、ノラとそのバンドを愛している。
今回のパフォーマンスは、とくにハーモニーに重点を置いていることが伝わってくる。ノラとそのバンドは、ひとつの完成されたコーラス・グループという感じだ。見事なアンサンブルだった。となると、バンドのメンバーをちゃんと書いておきたい。そのほか、後学ないし記念のためにまとめておこう。

武道館は今夜だけの公演だった。バンドは明日の木曜日に大阪城ホールでの公演を行い、ふたたび東京に戻り、土曜日には「Blue Note JAZZ Festival」のヘッドライナーを務める。その日ぼくは東京にいない。
しかし、月曜日に自由が丘の「hyphen」（ハイフン）というライブバーで行われるサミ・スティーブンス（今夜の彼女の歌声にぼくはガツンとやられたのだ）のソロのライブは予約した。小さい店のようだからいまから緊張する。
ぼくは10代のころからずっとアメリカの音楽が好きなのだが、こうして自分の暮らす街にアメリカからミュージシャンが来てくれるというのは、たいへん有り難いことである、と今夜思い至った。なにしろ日本武道館でポップスのコンサートが開かれたのは1966年のビートルズ（言うまでもなくイギリス人だが）が最初なのだ。そんな歴史のある場所で、こうして今日も、本場のミュージシャンの演奏する好きな音楽を聴けるというのは、とても感慨深いものである。なぜなら、東京がこの先も、世界中からアーティストを呼び寄せられる街であり続けるかどうかはわからないのだから。
Budokan
I went to see Norah Jones in concert at the Nippon Budokan.
I’ve always loved the form of music she works in—consistent, timeless—and both her songs and her performances are exceptional. Add to that her personality, which I find deeply endearing, and it all becomes a truly remarkable musical experience. I love Norah and her band with all my heart.
This particular performance felt especially focused on harmony. It wasn’t “Norah and her backing band” so much as a single, unified vocal ensemble. The result was a stunning display of musicianship. Which is why I want to list the band members properly—not just for reference, but as a kind of personal memento.

Tonight’s performance at Budokan was a one-night-only show. Tomorrow, the band heads to Osaka-jo Hall for another performance. After that, the band returns to Tokyo for the Blue Note JAZZ Festival on Saturday—but I won’t be in Tokyo that day.
However, I’ve reserved a seat for Sami Stevens’s solo show on Monday at hyphen, a small live music bar in Jiyugaoka. It seems like an intimate venue—I’m not sure I’ll be able to remain calm.
I’ve always loved American music, but this experience reminded me of how fortunate it is to have musicians from the U.S. come and perform in my city. After all, the first-ever pop concert held at the Budokan was The Beatles in 1966 (though of course they were British). That kind of history adds weight to the experience. To be able to hear music I love, in a place like this, on a night like tonight—it moves me deeply. Because there’s no telling whether Tokyo will continue to be a city that attracts artists from all over the world.
