昼過ぎに走りに出る。真っ昼間に走って暑さを感じないというのは、なんと喜ばしいことか。

多摩川の土手をジョグで10キロ走った。そのあとで1000メートルのインターバル走に取り掛かったのだが、負荷を上げると腰が痛んだ。ほんの600メートルのところで中止し帰る。この腰痛は内臓の疲れが原因だと経験上分かる。しばらくは質素な食事にすべきだろう。

祝日の静けさを利用して仕事をすすめる。

ローリング・ストーンズを聴き込む。来月の末ごろ、タイムアウト目黒で、ストーンズを演奏する会のホストを任されることになった。改めて楽曲を勉強しておきたいし、演奏についてはリハビリが必要だ。もう何ヶ月も楽器に触っていないという気がする。明日からがんばろう。それにしても、いい曲がたくさんあるなあ。詳細がまとまったら改めて告知させていただきます。

と、ふつうに告知するだけでは面白くないから、「一曲紹介」といこう。

初回の今日は1978年発表のアルバム『Some Girls』に収録された「Beast of Burden」を取り上げる。チャーリー・ワッツのミドル・テンポのドラミングに2本のギターが絡みつくという典型的なストーンズ・スタイルが味わえる曲だ。終始淡々とした曲調だが、ミック・ジャガーの歌唱にどんどん引き込まれる。ロン・ウッドの間奏のソロも秀逸。アウトロはチャーリーのドラムに遊び心がある。キース・リチャーズも単純なリフに徹しているようで、よく聴くと洒落たフレーズを随所に盛り込んでいる。この映像は1978年のもので、メンバーはみな35歳くらい。脂が乗り切っている。ミック・ジャガーがとにかくセクシーだ。

I went out for a run in the early afternoon. To feel no heat while running at this hour—how delightful that is.

I jogged 10 kilometers along the banks of the Tama River. After that, I started a 1,000-meter interval run, but pain in my lower back forced me to stop just 600 meters in. From experience, I know this back pain comes from internal fatigue. I should keep my meals simple for a while.

Taking advantage of the quiet holiday, I pushed forward with some work.

I listened closely to The Rolling Stones. Next month, I’ll be hosting a Stones-themed session night in Meguro. I want to re-study the songs properly, and my playing clearly needs rehabilitation—I feel like I haven’t touched an instrument in months. I’ll get back to it starting tomorrow.

Rather than just posting a plain announcement, I thought I’d kick things off with a “Song of the Day” series.

Today’s pick is “Beast of Burden,” from the Rolling Stones’ 1978 album Some Girls.

This track showcases the quintessential Stones sound: Charlie Watts’ mid-tempo drumming intertwined with two guitars weaving around each other. The groove stays steady throughout but Mick Jagger’s vocals pull you in deeper and deeper as the song goes on. Ron Wood play an excellent solo, and Charlie adds a playful touch to the outro on drums. Keith Richards, for his part, seems to be sticking to a simple riff—but if you listen closely, you’ll hear some clever flourishes tucked in here and there. The live footage I’m sharing is from 1978, when the members were all around 35 years old—right in their prime. And Mick Jagger? Unbelievably sexy.
