猫は昨日の大掃除がよほど嫌だったのか、一日の大半を部屋の隅や窓辺に引き篭もって過ごしていた。アミーガが遊びにきても頑なに心を閉ざしている様子は哀れであった。猫には悪いと思うが、部屋は、世間の夏休みのあいだを楽しく籠城するための準備がばっちり整った。猫も気に入ってくれるはずだ。
真昼間、走って投票へ行った。暑い。行き帰りで2キロほどの距離にして、今日は休息日ということにした。投票所まで走りながらもずいぶん悩んで、結局、今回は選挙区も比例も立憲民主党に入れた。短期的な物の見方をしたということだ。昨年、衆議院で議席を増した立憲民主党の仕事をぼくは評価する。このまま粘り強く自公と対決してほしい。が、共産党に票を入れられないのはつらい決断だった。
開票速報を3時過ぎまで観る。寝る。
The cat, still shaken from yesterday’s deep cleaning, spent most of the day tucked away in corners or by the window. Even when Amiga came over to visit, he kept his heart firmly closed—a pitiful sight. I do feel sorry, but the room is now perfectly prepared for a cheerful, summer-long siege from the world. I’m sure the cat will come to appreciate it too.
In the sweltering heat of midday, I jogged to the polling station—only about two kilometers round trip, so I called it a rest day. Even as I ran, I kept mulling over my vote.
In the end, I cast both my constituency and proportional representation ballots for the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. A short-term view, perhaps. But I value the work they’ve done since gaining seats in last year’s Lower House election. I hope they continue standing firm against the LDP–Komeito bloc.
Still, it was painful to withhold my vote from the Communist Party.
I stayed up watching the election returns until after 3 a.m. Then finally went to bed.
