今日ぐらいの暑さが夏の盛りだったらいい。風もあったし日陰なら心地よかった。真昼に走ろうとは思わないが、日没後なら走れる。それくらいの暑さ。街を歩けば薔薇がよく咲いている。薔薇は初夏の季題だ。

If only the height of summer were as mild as today. There was a breeze, and the shade felt pleasant. I wouldn’t run in the middle of the day, but after sunset, it’s doable—the kind of heat that makes that possible.
Walking through town, I saw roses blooming everywhere.
In haiku, roses are a seasonal word for early summer.
咲き満ちて雨夜も薔薇のひかりあり
(saki-michite amayo-mo bara-no hikari-ari)
The roses are in full bloom—
even on a rainy night,
their light remains.
